Transform Lives by Trusting Women

Trusting women is at the very core of Uplift’s mission - to transform the lives of women in crisis.

In order to provide agile, direct financial assistance, it is vital that we trust the women we are serving. In 2023, Uplift supported 202 women and children. This would not be possible without trust.

Having an innate trust in our grant applicants allows us to move quickly in their moment of need. Instead of getting bogged down with bureaucracy or stipulating that Uplift funds can only be used in specific ways, we place dollars into the hands of women, immediately.

Because we believe—we know—that when women feel encouraged and empowered, they are able to lift themselves out of crisis.

And you know what?T hey are able to lift themselves out of crisis because they know what they need better than we do.

A 2020 FreeFrom report put it this way: “The reluctance to provide survivors with direct cash assistance reveals an uncomfortable truth - as a society, we don’t trust survivors to spend money in the ‘right’ way.”

Yet, giving money directly to people in need has become a growing trend throughout the country in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The evidence shows that it’s working, because it is a faster, more flexible way for people to navigate crisis.

We believe in girls and women. We believe that it is important to build their confidence and empower them to succeed. And we believe that trust is crucial to lifting women out of crisis.

That same FreeFrom report found that half of survivors would seek financial support from an institution, if they knew services and support for survivors was available. How much more likely would a woman in crisis be to seek support if she knew the support was not only available, but was given joyfully, with the intent to empower rather than regulate?

The good news is, Uplift is already doing this!
